Rochester Resources for Decluttering!

Where to get rid of ...

Old TVs and electronics including VCRs, phones, cords

  1. *Drop off your electronics select Sundays at the Rochester Public Market.  Details here.

  2. *Town recycling days.  (Click here for specific times and locations)

Plastics, cardboard, newspapers, worthless books and magazines

* They can be put in your recycling bin.  Here’s the list

Craft items, including yarn, needles, fabrics, kits, craft paint,

* Drop them off at Craft Bits ‘n Pieces in Fairport

Building supplies, fixtures

  1. *Flower City Habitat for Humanity is seeking donations of everything from screen doors, ceiling fans to paint.  Here is the link

Tools

* Take them to the Tool Thrift Shop in Fairport.  Great place to donate your husband’s or father’s tools!

Old Furniture

  1. *Here’s a consignment shop where store profits benefit mental health services for those who cannot pay AND you get to keep half of the proceeds as well!  New Unto Others is a ministry of Spiritus Christi Church.  Check here to see customers’ “wish lists.”

Collectibles

* Have eBay items to donate?  Auction and Go in Webster (671-1200) will accept your auction items and sell them on behalf of the Center for Missing and Exploited Children here in Rochester!  YOU get the tax deduction and the Center receives the proceeds.  This is a great way to declutter AND donate to charity at the same time - especially those items you think have some value.

* Want to sell online yourself?  If you want to determine the value, then sign in to eBay and do a search for your item.  When the page pops up of all the similar items, look at the left side of the page.  About halfway down that column, you’ll see “Completed Listings.”  Click on that and see WHAT THE ITEMS ACTUALLY SOLD FOR.  If the item price is in red, it did NOT sell.  GREEN is the final price.

“I Just Want to Give It Away!”

* Check out www.communitywishbook.org, created by the Messenger Post newspapers, to provide a “wish list” of items needed by local non-profit organizations.

Hoarding Support Group, sponsored by the Creative Wellness Coalition, meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 320 N. Goodman St., from 5 - 7 pm.  NOTE:  the group is “hardcore” with many attendees who are coping with other mental illnesses such as bipolar disease or depression.  This may be the group for you.  If you have more of a “clutter” issue, then please consider attending the Clutterbug Support Group at Elmgrove Methodist Church. (See classes page on my website. )

Here’s another site for the Rochester area where you can list and receive FREE items.

Many local libraries collect BOOKS, MAGAZINES, VIDEOS and AUDIOTAPES throughout the year for their annual book sales..

Marla Cilley, aka the Fly Lady, has created a free and immensely popular website focusing on helping people let go of clutter by developing daily routines. If you sign up for her emails, BE SURE to click on DIGEST when you sign up so that you don’t end up getting 7 emails a day!

Favorite Websites

Once you’re DONE decluttering, you may want to  spend some time entering online contests.  This is a GREAT website (I’ve won several things through this site).  The site is a directory of online sweepstakes, contests and freebies.  There is no spam, no pop-ups and no registration fee.  She updates the site every day!

This is a very interesting website that I found while doing research for this website.  Squalor survivors features a lot of personal stories and photos for people who believe they have a serious clutter and/or hoarding problem.

For families of hoarders, visit children of hoarders.  Good information and videos.

This is another website filled with good information, and is made up of people and their families who are dealing with hoarding.
